This is in response to English: Education Ministry Opens Line For Suggestions.

The following is the letter I wrote to the Education Ministry:

Dear Sir/Ms,

I have a suggestion for English. Let us have two different standards for English Course. We can have (1) English and (2) Further English. Schools have the option to choose either course. Those in elementary level shall take English. Others in higher level shall take Further English.

We can also do the same for the Teaching of Science and Mathematics. We can have a bilingual system. Schools have the option to choose teaching-learning Science and Mathematics in English or in mother tongue (Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese or Tamil).

Malaysia is the melting pot of cultures, we should embrace multivulturism!

Regards,
Poh Swee Hiang

Teaching of proper English with grammar is important. Making English compulsory at 2 levels will help.

Using Science and Maths to teach English or using English to tach Science and Maths probably a half baked idea from the start.

We need good English speakers for a start.

You have a good idea about offering two levels of English. This is similar to the IGCSE where students can opt for Core English [lower proficiency students; the highest grade one can get is a C] or Extended English. Students can also choose to study English as a First language or English as a Second Language.

Teaching Science and Mathematics using English is a loaded issue no matter which side of the fence you are on. But it can't be denied that English is a tool that is needed in this globalization era.
